How long will permanent life insurance last?
Permanent life insurance is designed to last for your entire lifetime, provided the policy is properly funded and remains in force according to its terms.
Unlike term insurance, it does not expire after a set number of years. Whether you live to age 80, 90, 100, or beyond, the policy is intended to continue protecting you and your family. It is one of the reasons permanent life insurance is commonly used for estate planning, wealth preservation, and creating a tax free legacy.

Does permanent life insurance ever expire or lapse?
Permanent life insurance does not have a scheduled expiry date, but it can lapse if required premiums are not paid or if the policy is not managed properly.
This is particularly important with some universal life policies, where insufficient funding or poor investment performance may affect the policy over time. A properly designed and regularly reviewed policy greatly reduces this risk.
Working with an experienced advisor who monitors your policy throughout your lifetime helps ensure it continues performing as intended.
Do you pay premiums forever?
Many permanent life insurance policies offer limited payment options.
For example you may pay premiums for 10 years, 20 years, or until age 100, depending on the insurer and policy design. Some clients choose to make larger contributions over a shorter period so the policy becomes fully paid up earlier in retirement.
The right payment structure depends on your cash flow, financial objectives, and estate planning goals. A well-designed policy should fit comfortably within your long-term financial plan.

Will the death benefit still exist at age 90 or 100?
If your permanent life insurance policy remains in force, the death benefit continues regardless of whether you pass away at age 90, 100, or even older.
In fact, many participating whole life policies increase their death benefit over time through dividends, although future growth is not guaranteed and depends on the insurer’s dividend performance.
This means the value of the insurance may continue to grow while also providing tax sheltered growth within the policy. For many families, this creates additional financial security and helps offset the impact of inflation and future estate taxes.
Is life insurance a good estate planning tool?
Permanent life insurance is one of the most effective estate planning tools available because it provides immediate liquidity when it is needed most.
The policy allows investments inside it to grow on a tax sheltered basis, and the death benefit is paid tax free to your beneficiaries. For corporate owned life insurance, the proceeds may also create a Capital Dividend Account, allowing most of the insurance proceeds to be distributed tax free to shareholders.
It can help pay estate taxes, preserve businesses, cottages, investment properties, and family wealth without forcing your beneficiaries to sell valuable assets.

Where should I buy life insurance in Ontario?
Choosing the right life insurance policy is just as important as choosing the right insurance company and advisor.
At Strategic Wealth Protection Partners (SWPP), we begin with our Living Estate Planning Process, where we first evaluate your estate, taxes, retirement goals, and the seven different planning options before recommending whether life insurance is appropriate. Because we represent many of Canada’s leading insurance companies, we can compare products, underwriting, and policy features to find the solution that best fits your unique situation.
When purchasing permanent life insurance, it is also important to work with a broker who specializes in estate planning, because the best policy is not simply the one with the lowest premium. The right advisor understands how your insurance integrates with your tax planning, retirement planning, and estate plan so that it continues working for you and your family for the rest of your life.
